Pianist Catherine Norton teaches song accompaniment at the New Zealand School of Music, and is in demand as a pianist specialising in vocal repertoire. She studied with Thomas Hecht at Victoria University of Wellington and was an Emerging Artist with New Zealand Opera. She completed her postgraduate studies in London at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Eugene Asti and Pamela Lidiard, where she was the winner of the Guildhall Accompanists' Prize and the Paul Hamburger Prize for duo, and was appointed a Junior Fellow for 2012-13.
Catherine was a Britten-Pears Young Artist in 2013, is an alumna of Austria's acclaimed Franz-Schubert-Institut for Lieder, and is the winner of numerous awards and scholarships, including the Victoria University Concerto Competition and Britain's AESS National English Song Competition. She has been privileged to be a member of the Young Songmakers' Almanac and of the Song Guild, under the guidance of Graham Johnson. She has performed in the public masterclasses of artists including Elly Ameling, Ian Bostridge, Helmut Deutsch, Julius Drake, Gerald Finley, Martin Katz, Malcolm Martineau, and Roger Vignoles.
Catherine has appeared in recital in concert halls including the Barbican Hall, St John’s Smith Square, and LSO St Luke’s, and at the Oxford Lieder Festival, as well as around England and in France, Germany, Northern Ireland and Malta.
